The second Young Okanagan Writer’s Contest has been a huge success for the organizers, Penticton
Writers and Publishers, who would like to extend appreciation to parents and teachers for taking
time to assist children and students with their entries. One hundred and twenty-one (121) entries
were received from across the Okanagan Valley. Categories were short fiction and poetry, opened to
10 – 13 and 14 – 17. The largest category was 14 – 17, which received 42 entries.

The group would like to publicly thank the following individuals and groups for donating
winners’ prizes and services towards making this contest successful: Mr. Andre Martin of The
Penticton Herald newspapers for publishing the 4 -1st. place winners; Penny Smith, Janey Volden,
Alan Longworth, Fay Rothlander and Yasmin John-Thorpe of the Penticton Writers and Publishers’
members for judging the entries; Erin Harbor of the Summerland Penny Lane Bargain Outlet, the
Summerland Rotary, Bill Schwarz of the Regional District of the Okanagan/Similkameen, David Knowles
of the Central Okanagan Regional District, Mr. and Mrs. David Knowles, Len Bidwell at Okanagan
College Printers and Teresa Tonner at Bongarde Publications.

The following winners and honourable mentions will be featured in the fall publication of
2007Gems of the Okanagan anthology.

Contest Prizes:
First Place Short Fiction and Poetry - $ 125.00 both age groups
Second Place Short Fiction and Poetry - $75.00 both age groups
Third Place Short Fiction and Poetry - $50.00 both age groups

First place winners in each category and age group will have their entry printed in the Okanagan Valley Sunday News.
Winners will also be invited to read their entry, details to be announced.
